Tour Details

Do you love working with your hands, heart, and mind all while making a difference? Then this trip to Bulgaria is just for you!

On this eleven day tour you will have the opportunity to explore the great sites of Bulgaria while also completing 15 hours of service learning. Service will consist of helping to clean up a community park in the central square of the village of Stolat, Bulgaria. Travel to two major cities (Sofia & Veliko Tarnovo) see sites spanning 5000 years of history including a Roman amphitheater & a medieval castle. In addition to all the cultural excursions ample time will be provided to relax and adventure through the natural wonders of Bulgaria by hiking to a waterfall and enjoying our 2000 acre property in the Balkan Mountains.

This youth Service Learning trip is part of Stone & Compass’ Bulgaria Sustainable Development Project supporting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Ages for this trip are 14 to 18 and/or students who will enter 9th grade in Fall of 2025 through 2025 graduating seniors. Parent/guardian permission required.

Itinerary
Day 1
Travel to Bulgaria

We will take a late afternoon/early evening flight from the USA to Bulgaria. This will be an overnight flight with a stop in Europe. Arrival in Sofia, Bulgaria is on the afternoon of day 2 taking into account the 7 hour time difference.

Day 2
Arrive in Bulgaria

In the early afternoon we will arrive in Sofia, Bulgaria and transport via bus to the Stone & Compass 2,200 acre center in Stolat. Arriving in the evening everyone will enjoy a hearty meal and settle into accommodations for the evening. You can explore the outdoors with lawn games, pool, walking trails, horses, and more.

Day 3
Veliko Tarnovo & Tsaravets Fortress

Today enjoy a day trip to the 2nd Bulgarian empire’s capital city of Veliko Tarnovo. Here you will have the opportunity to climb Tsaravets Fortress which was the hub of this medieval city. Shopping, gelato, and traditional crafts make Veliko a favorite of all who visit.

Day 4
Service Day

Help us bring back a community park by planting flowers, painting fences, and cleaning up this community space so that everyone can enjoy it. After we are done working, we will enjoy an awesome BBQ and pool party!

Day 5
Lagoon Day

Today we will head to a lagoon and waterfall and go hiking, swimming, and have an awesome lunch at this hidden oasis.

Day 6
Etara

Today you will visit an ethnographic open air living museum “Etara” where you will get to see craftsman working on traditional water powered machinery. A great place to sample traditional sweets and baked goods and buy handcrafts to bring home to your family and friends. In the afternoon we return to our work at the theatre.

Day 7
Cultural Exchange

Travel to Veliko Tarnovo today to have a cultural exchange and service experience with Bulgarian High School students.

Day 8
Service Day

Today we continue our work in the park and also have a chance to work in an orchard learning how to harvest fruit! 

Day 9
Sofia Tour

Depart Stone & Compass Center in the morning and drive to the capital of Sofia. Late afternoon/evening walking tour of Sofia, museums, relaxing & shopping. Check into the hotel and get a good night sleep for departure in the morning.

Day 10
Travel Home

Wake today and cherish the memories you have made as we head back to the US.
