Inaugural Artist Residency!
Are you a recent graduate with a degree in the arts? Are you feeling stagnant and in need of an artistic reset? Then join us for our first artist residency workshop! This two-week program is designed to inspire young artists and writers who wish to broaden their artistic perspective. Along with tours of the ancient and modern world in beautiful Bulgaria, artists and writers will produce works that will be shown in an intimate gala at the closing of our residency. Upon returning home, you will feel refreshed, renewed, and with a new purpose in your practice.

Facilitator

Helping to lead you through these two weeks will be Jessy Boyer. Jessy is a graduate in art history from California State University in Long Beach. They have been working with Stone and Compass since 2020 and is the perfect guide for your artistic journey in Bulgaria!

Itinerary
Day 1
Departure

Depart the United States on overnight flight to Sofia, Bulgaria.

Day 2
Arrive in Sofia

Explore the capital of Bulgaria! Enjoy a walking tour of the city, and learn all about the ins and outs of this colorful metropolis.

Day 3
Sofia

Explore some of Sofia’s anthropological museums today all while embracing the second half of the walking tour. Drive that evening to the Stone & Compass Center.

Day 4
Settle in Stolat

Take a rest day to reorient yourself in your new home for the remainder of the residency. Explore the grounds and surrounding town.

Day 5
Open Air Ethnographic Museum (Etar)

Enjoy a day trip to the open air ethnographic museum in Etarra. Here we’ll learn about the architecture and lifestyle of the Gabrovo region during the 18th and 18th centuries. We will be introduced to the arts and crafts of Bulgaria and observe craftspeople making bells, pottery, confections, furs, and copper goods.

Stone & Compass Center

Spend the day at the Center, working on your projects and exploring the town.

Day 7
Work Day

Enjoy breakfast at our local café while discussing your ideas for your pieces. Use today to familiarize yourself with the Stone and Compass grounds and neighboring village. Sketch amongst our tree orchard and grapevines. Get a feel for the pastoral scenes of Stolat, and explore two Roman burial mounds right on our campus! In the evening, enjoy a pizza dinner in our fabulous barn.

Day 8
Veliko Tarnovo Excursion

Day trip to Veliko Tarnovo! Have a taste of past and present in the art’s district of Bulgaria. Meet Nina, a renowned ceramicist whose works recall designs of ancient Rome. Return to the center for a fireside chat.

Day 9
Work Day

Today, continue work on your pieces. Paint in plein air amongst Soviet-era olive groves! Write a stanza of poetry while in the back of a donkey cart! Practice live drawing with local animals! Use today to get loose and let your ideas flow.

Day 10
Work Day

Take extra time today now that you are well into your works to collaborate with your fellow artists. Participate in an art critique with your peers, and see your art from new perspectives. This evening, sit around the campfire and further discuss your work.

Work Day

Finish those final touches on your pieces and take the day for any last inspiration before our art show the next day!

Day 12
Party!

Display your work in the barn for an audience of locals, university students, and local officials. Enjoy traditional Bulgarian dancing to conclude your residency.

Final Day

Drive back to Sofia.
