Depart the United States for Uganda
We continue our journey from the United States to Uganda
We will arrive in Kampala Uganda in the very early hours of morning where we will be transported to the hotel to store our luggage and have breakfast. You will then be taken to Saayii and there you will have a meeting with the town elders and hear more about the health issues affecting the local community and the surrounding areas.
You can then spend the rest of the day working with patients in the local community and assessing the health administration policies at the Stone and Compass hospital.
In the evening we will have a health and safety briefing as well as our evening meal and we will also enjoy a traditional Ugandan celebration with the Saayii community.
After breakfast you will spend the day working at the S&C funded hospital in Saayii. You will work one-on-one with patients and have an opportunity to interact with local healthcare providers.
You will work on helping implement new ideas to help the community streamline their healthcare systems and work on creating more opportunities to service the local populations. You will have a hands-on approach to helping the hospital administration and patients.
Spend a second day working at the S&C funded hospital in Saayii directly with patients. On this day local officials will also involve students in joint meetings discussing health education outreach in the community.
Later, we will spend time visiting a local health care clinic where you will have a chance to learn more about how community members access healthcare services.
Today you will get to experience Ugandan music through a performance of Ugandan dancers and drummers. You will get to participate in a drumming circle.
Afterwards you will be able to enjoy a visit to a local market, then in the evening enjoy a traditional Ugandan dinner.
We will spend today working at a local clinic in a town nearby the hopsital. We will have the opportunity to meet the local community and work with local health officials to see patients and interact with those seeking care.
Last morning in Uganda – enjoy breakfast and a farewell ceremon.
Fly to Tanzania (Moshi) late in the afternoon We will immediately go to our accommodations in Moshi, a lodge 45 minutes from the airport. You will have a chance to settle in before heading off to a Welcome Dinner.
Our first full day in Tanzania we will head to the home of the Chaga tribe. It is still an authentic tribal village. This charming place is just 15km away from Moshi Town and is the last village before the Kilimanjaro National Park. Spend the day learning from the Chaga people about traditional medicine and herbal remedies utilized in traditional healing. Also learn about the importance of coffee in the region as students get to participate in traditional coffee roasting ceremonies and get a chance to hike into the Kilimanjaro Forest and swim in a waterfall lagoon!
This morning you will have the opportunity to expand your vocabulary after breakfast as you will be able to learn some of the native language of Tanzania, Swahili.
Later on in the day we will take in the Maassi tour with the herbal healthcare lens before settling down for our evening meal.
Today after an early breakfast we will travel and visit Asali projects partner Simba’s community center in the morning. There we will learn all about their locally led development approach and the programs they run in the community and their health projects. We will then move on and visit a local clinic in the same community.
Today we will have lunch at Courage Cafe and learn all about their NGO Courage Worldwide and the work they are doing to support victims of human trafficking.
Today we will visit Tarangire National Park. The park is home to all types of wildlife including elephants, lions, gazelles, wildebeests, giraffes and even the odd black rhino.
Today, we have a chance to work in a medical clinic here in Tanzania. We will have a chance to work one-on-one with the local community. This will also offer us the opportunity to compare and contrast medical care at the clinic in Uganda and this clinic in Tanzania.
Today we will visit a natural clean spring water – Chemka Hot Springs. Ideal for swimming in the warm water and relaxation. The surrounding areas provide stunning views with a great picnic spot.
Later, we will visit an amazing Serval Wildlife Animal Rehabilitation Center, where we will have a chance to interact with the amazing animals found here. They are currently home African lions, colobus monkeys, giraffes, bat-eared fox, elands, oafish ostriches, and blue & vervet monkeys.
