Itinerary
Day 1 & 2
Sofia, Bulgaria

The group arrives in the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, for an introduction to the region and exploration of the city’s history from ancient Roman times through the Cold War and to membership in the European Union. Students will gain an overview of pharmacy practice in Bulgaria through meetings with Ministry of Health officials, faculty and students at the Medical University of Sofia, and the nonprofit Trust for Social Achievement. In addition, representatives of the Balkan Heritage Foundation will lead a walking tour of Sofia.

Day 3
Stolat, Bulgaria

The Stone & Compass cultural retreat center at Stolat sits on a expansive nature preserve in central Bulgaria. The site has become the second leading producer of honey in Bulgaria. Students will live and study at the center and take part in cultural activities, including a hands-on demonstration of how honey and other medicinal natural products are made. Stone & Compass is launching a health clinic at its site that will serve the surrounding community. Participants will plan and participate in an health fair designed to raise awareness of the new clinic.

Day 4
Stolat, Bulgaria

Students will visit Sevlievo Hospital in the regional capital city for a tour of the faciity and meetings with pharmacists practicing at this site. In the afternoon, students will enjoy the natural beauty of Bulgaria with a visit to the Krushina Waterfall and Devetashka Cave. Back at the Center, students will meet with local officials to discuss sustainability initiatives.

Day 5
Stolat, Bulgaria

Local healers will visit the Center to discuss the history and current practice of folk medicine in the region. Students will host a health fair in the city of Sevlievo today.

Day 6
Stolat, Bulgaria

The folk medicine theme continues with Beekeeping 101 and a look at the Stone & Compass Organic Honey Farming initiative, as well as lavender oils and healing herbs. In the afternoon, the group will visit a swimming hole said by the locals to have healing powers.

Day 7
Stolat & Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria

The day begins with a visit to Veliko Tarnovo, the ancient capital of the 10thCentury Kingdom of Bulgaria.

Day 8
Stolat and Plovdiv, Bulgaria

On the way to Plovdiv, students will visit Bulgaria’s famed Rose Valley, where more than half of the world’s supply of Rose Oil. Upon arrival in Plovdiv, the second largest city of Bulgaria, students will tour the historical center. Plovdiv, for meetings at Plovdiv Medical University faculty, a visit to the apothecary museum, and a tour of a community pharmacy.

Day 9
Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Students will visit the Medical University of Plovdiv, a partner of USC Mann, to learn about pharmacy education in Bulgaria and share their experience. They will also visit the university’s medical school and hospital.

Day 10
Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Continue your visit to the Medical University of Plovdiv, a partner of USC Mann. Later today we will spend some more time sightseeing in Plovdiv.

Day 11
Varna, Bulgaria

Visit to this major resort city on the Black Sea.

Day 12
Sofia, Bulgaria

Return to Sofia and fly home.
